Urgent appeal: a message from our Director of Veterinary Services

by Richard Hooker | 20 April 2020 #News

In this time of uncertainty, there are still thousands of people who rely on PDSA to help their pets in their time of need. Richard Hooker, PDSA Director of Veterinary Services, explains why we need your support more than ever.

The last few weeks have been tough for people right across the UK and we’ve felt its impact here at PDSA, too. We’ve had to make huge changes to the way we care for pets so that we can keep everyone safe – our clients, our dedicated staff, and the wider public.

Like you, everyone at PDSA has felt the struggle of adapting to the changes the coronavirus has brought to our lives.

Through all of this, our priority has been to ensure PDSA Pet Hospitals are still able to help pets and people in need.

The challenge we’ve faced

All veterinary practices across the country are now only able to offer an emergency service. We’re taking all the precautions necessary to keep our staff and clients safe, including doing the vast majority of consults by phone or online video link. Our Pet Hospitals remain open to see emergencies and the sickest of pets, but we're asking our clients to make sure they phone us first before visiting. While many around the country are confined to their homes, our teams of veterinary professionals are still hard at work treating thousands of pets in their hour of need.

With so many people across the country facing financial uncertainty, demand for our service is as high as ever and very likely to grow further. More and more people are desperately worried about being able to afford treatment for their beloved pet and companion – their family.

PDSA's mission is to provide help and assistance, so that no pet suffers because of their owner's financial hardship. We want to continue to be there right through the coronavirus pandemic, treating life-threatening cases and ensuring pets are comfortable and free from pain.

We can’t do it without you

We’re a charity and we rely on the donations of generous animal lovers like you. Your donations are always gratefully received and now they’re more important than ever.

Following government guidelines and to keep everyone safe, we’ve had to close our charity shops. Fundraising events like the London Marathon have been cancelled or postponed. This means we’re more reliant on donations to fund our Pet Hospitals and provide the care that seriously ill pets need.

Every pound we receive makes a difference to the life of a sick or injured pet, to our staff needing supplies on the front-line, and to the owner faced with losing their best friend. Your donations will help us save more lives and keep more families together throughout this crisis.

If you can, please donate.

The difference you’ll make

The situation around the world and in our country is changing fast. The elderly, widowed and those who have lost their jobs will need the companionship that pets bring as they self-isolate and social distance. It’s our mission to keep those pets happy, healthy and in their loving homes.

That’s why we need your help, now more than ever.

With your help, we can be there in a pet’s hour of need, especially whilst this pandemic lasts.

We appreciate your support. Together we can make a huge difference and reduce pet suffering.
