I spend roughly 20 hours volunteering over four days a week at the Blackpool PDSA charity shop, where I’ve volunteered for almost seven years.
In 2018, I walked past the PDSA shop and noticed a sign displayed in the window asking for volunteers. Knowing I had time to spare, I went in and spoke to the Shop Manager, who welcomed me with a smile. My first day as a volunteer arrived not long after.
I hadn’t thought about volunteering at PDSA before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I knew it would be a good fit for me because of my love for animals.
Each day as a PDSA volunteer can be different. Normally I’ll be at the till serving customers or helping them with anything they need. Some of my other tasks include putting out stock on the shop floor and pricing women’s accessories. I’ll also change the mannequins and update the window display from time to time to give the shop a fresh look.
What I love most is the chance to meet new people and connect with the local community. I really enjoy talking to the customers and learning more about them (and often their pets too!). Sometimes, people may not know much about PDSA, so I’ll explain the great work the charity does and the positive difference it makes to pets and their owners – like those who rely on vet services at our local Blackpool PDSA Pet Hospital.
But it’s not all about the customers! I’ve also made great friendships with the rest of the team at the shop, which makes every day enjoyable. We’re definitely a close-knit bunch.
Would I recommend volunteering at PDSA? Yes, without a doubt!
I have plenty of fun meeting new faces and learning different things every day, and I’m proud to be involved with such a wonderful charity. Donating my time here means I play a part in looking after poorly pets in the Pet Hospitals – it’s definitely rewarding.
My confidence has grown too, which has boosted other aspects of my life. When I think back to my first day in 2018, I wasn’t sure of myself or how I’d fit into the team. But volunteering has helped me step out of my comfort zone, learn new skills, and develop a more positive mindset. The managers here are amazing too.
If you’re reading this and wondering whether to become a volunteer, my advice is simple – go for it! You’ll be giving to a good cause while reaping the benefits as well.
“Ruth’s a very dedicated and passionate volunteer; she’ll offer extra hours and is always happy to help out as much as she can. She believes in PDSA’s cause and loves helping raise funds for pets in need. We couldn't run our shop without her!”
