Five reasons why you should volunteer at a PDSA charity shop

by PDSA | 28 May

Volunteering your time is one of the best ways to give back to charities while gaining new skills.

Every year, we treat thousands of pets across our 49 Pet Hospitals. And we treat more pets than all of the other UK veterinary charities put together. This wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers who kindly donate their time to PDSA. We’re extremely grateful for our volunteers, and we wouldn’t be able to keep people and pets together without their support.

By volunteering at PDSA, you’re helping to raise money to keep people and pets together. There are countless reasons to volunteer in a PDSA charity shop – here are our top five.

1. Gain practical work experience

No matter what your current skills or experience, we have a volunteering role that is perfect for you. To volunteer at a PDSA charity shop, no previous experience is required as we provide full training and support with ongoing coaching and we’ll reimburse your travel expenses so you’re not out of pocket

You’ll gain valuable skills and experience while volunteering at PDSA. What’s more, you’ll be able to strengthen and improve your existing skills, which you can add to your CV. You will also get access to our Volunteer Hub, which is full of useful training courses and development materials.

2. Meet new people

Volunteering is a great way to meet people and build long-lasting relationships with people in your local community. Whether you have just moved to a new area or you’re looking to widen your social circle, volunteering allows you to connect with new people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

3. Grow in confidence

As a volunteer at PDSA, there is no pressure to have skills beforehand. It’s the perfect place to try out new things in a supportive, warm and friendly environment with guidance at every step of the way. Whether it’s interacting with customers or learning how to sort stock donations, these tasks will help build your confidence.

4. Promote sustainability

PDSA charity shops help reduce and recycle waste as we give new life to items that were once forgotten. Instead of items being dumped in landfills, we encourage donations to our shops, sort through a variety of goods from kind supporters, and find new owners for them.

By volunteering at PDSA, you’re helping to promote sustainability and make a better future for our planet. This helps create a better environment for future generations, while making a difference to people and pets’ lives now. What’s more, you could pick up a hidden gem or two!

5. Make a difference and save pets in need

Our volunteers are very important. Without them, we wouldn't be able to raise the funds to help keep people and pets together. By volunteering with PDSA, you will give something back to a worthy cause and help treat thousands of pets across our 49 Pet Hospitals.

So, there you have it – when you lend a paw to PDSA, you're not just volunteering; you're making tails wag, hearts purr, and a real difference in the lives of pets and their families. You can donate as much or as little as you like – every hour that you volunteer makes a difference. Support our life-saving work by volunteering at a PDSA charity shop today.
