A day in the life with Veterinary Receptionist Lotte

by PDSA | 30 September

Find out what a typical day looks like for Veterinary Receptionist Lotte.

Veterinary Receptionist, Lotte, from Leeds PDSA Pet Hospital, discusses her passion for working in the veterinary sector and the rewards and challenges of her role.

Why did you want to work at PDSA?

I had heard of PDSA in the past but didn’t know much about the charity. I’ve always been a huge fan of animals and loved the idea of working in the veterinary industry.

What does a typical day at PDSA look like for you?

In a nutshell, it’s very busy, varied and unpredictable (which I love)! Throughout a typical day, my tasks include (but are not limited to):

  • Booking pets’ appointments and scheduling follow-ups.
  • Registering new patients.
  • Dealing with enquiries and supporting pet owners where I can.
  • Communicating with the clinical team to ensure a good flow in the Pet Hospital.
  • Keeping the waiting room area clean and tidy.

What do you enjoy most about working at PDSA?

I love that each day is different, and I never know what to expect. Thankfully, I have a great team, so we all support each other. I also enjoy seeing the happy and successful stories that come through - they're so heartwarming.

Do you have pets?

Yes, I'm a massive animal lover. I have six cats named Lavender, Simba, Nala, Martha, Trudy, and Percy, as well as two dogs: a Toy Poodle named Hugo, and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Ruby. I need to stop rescuing cats as six is enough, people will start calling me a crazy cat lady soon!

What are the most common problems that clients book appointments for?

I tend to see quite a lot of pets who are unwell with vomiting and diarrhoea. Pyometra, broken bones and problems in senior pets are quite common as well.

What’s the strangest phone call you’ve had working at PDSA?

Probably when people call to say their dog has eaten something random like nails, screws or chocolate easter eggs. I’ve heard it all now!

Would you recommend working as a Veterinary Receptionist at PDSA?

Yes, there’s a lot to enjoy working at PDSA. It’s an interesting job as there’s always lots going on and more to learn.

Why do you think PDSA is an important charity?

It provides vet care for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access treatment for their pets. The public’s support and donations are extremely important as we wouldn’t be here without their kind contributions.

What would you say to someone who was thinking of working at PDSA as a Vet Receptionist?

I’d say to go for it! If you want a fun, interesting and varied job that keeps you on your toes, PDSA is for you!
