A celebration of the PDSA Order of Merit

First awarded in 2014, the PDSA Order of Merit is presented to any animal who merits recognition for outstanding acts of devotion to their owner or wider society and represents outstanding examples of the special bond and relationship that exists between animals and humans.

Meet the PDSA Order of Merit recipients

In July 2022, we recognised five very special dogs for their outstanding devotion, loyal companionship, and positive contributions to society. Find out more about the recipients, who were all formally awarded the PDSA Order of Merit at a special ceremony in London, below.

Clive – Cocker Spaniel

Ten-year-old Clive received the PDSA Order of Merit for life-changing devotion to his owner, Michelle Sutherland, as a Medical Detection Dog and a constant companion.

Police Dog (PD) Dexter – Labrador Retriever

PD Dexter received the PDSA Order of Merit for outstanding devotion to duty as a Wellbeing Dog with the Metropolitan Police Service.

Jerry – Cocker Spaniel

Jerry received the PDSA Order of Merit for life-changing devotion to his owner, Mark Lanchbery, as a PTSD Assistance Dog and for his work as a veteran mentor with Service Dogs UK.

Oliver received the PDSA Order of Merit for his devotion to duty and service to society as an Assistance Dog providing comfort and support to vulnerable victims throughout the Criminal Justice System.

The PDSA Animal Awards Programme helps to raise the status of animals in society by celebrating the incredible contribution they make to our lives. We believe, just as Maria Dickin did, that raising the status of animals in society helps improve the care they receive and their welfare.
