PDSA Vet Nurse goes extra mile in London Marathon
10 April 2024
A PDSA Vet Nurse from Essex is set to go the extra mile for the pets in her care after signing up to this year’s TCS London Marathon.
Chloe Mackintosh, who lives in Rayleigh, is the Head Vet Nurse at Romford PDSA Pet Hospital but is swapping her scrubs for her running kit on Sunday 21 April to take on the 26.2 mile challenge.
The 29-year-old said she’s seen first-hand the impact PDSA has on families and wanted to do something to give back.
Chloe explained: “I started my career at PDSA, training to become a Vet Nurse, since then I’ve worked my way up to Head Vet Nurse, and now I’m about to leave to go to the Royal Veterinary College to train to become a Veterinary Surgeon.
“I’ve always wanted to do some sort of challenge and raise money for this amazing cause, and this year felt the right time to do it.”
She added that working inside the Pet Hospital and seeing how many people and pets need PDSA’s help inspired her to sign up to one of the world’s most popular challenges.
“The service PDSA offers is a lifeline to pets and owners who, without it, would have nowhere else to turn.
"I'm so proud to be running for PDSA and to be raising important funds and awareness of this organisation that I am so proud to work for.”
Chloe is already halfway towards her fundraising target of £2,000 thanks to the help of her friends and family.
“My family and friends have been very generous with their donations,” she shares. “My husband, Nathan, is also hugely supportive – I know he’ll be there on the day cheering me on and waiting for me at the finishing line!”
Romford PDSA Pet Hospital, The Julie & Robert Breckman Centre, is one of 49 PDSA Pet Hospitals across the country which delivers free and low cost veterinary care to poorly pets in need. In 2023, the hospital on Danes Road saw almost 100 pets every day.
Faye Waters, Fundraising Manager at PDSA, said: “We’re all so thankful to Chloe for supporting PDSA at this year’s London Marathon. Her generous fundraising efforts will enable us to continue our life-saving work, treating pets whose owners have nowhere else to turn. It is thanks to the incredible support of kind-hearted people like Chloe that we are able to provide vital treatment for poorly animals and make a real difference to their owners.”
