Oriental Breed Information

The Oriental loves to play and interact with people. They especially enjoy a game of fetch!

You are likely to receive a lot of chatter from an Oriental, and they often love to be where you are telling you about their day. You’ll find them snuggled up on your lap or perched on a high spot in the room, so providing them with a cat tree will enable them to perch high safely.

Breed-related health problems:

Owners are, understandably, upset when their cat develops a health problem linked to its breed. Often they wish they’d known what problems the breed was prone to have. The potential health problems that Orientals are prone to include:

• Progressive retinal atrophy – a genetic eye problem which causes progressive blindness. Genetic tests are available to check for the disease.

We’d recommend discussing the medical history of your potential kitten’s parents and grandparents, and think very carefully before taking on a cat with any of the health conditions listed above evident in the family line.

Coat care:

Although they have short fur and don’t require frequent grooming for care reasons, they may associate brushing with affection and enjoy being groomed
