Domestic Shorthair Breed Information
Whilst not a recognised breed, domestic shorthairs, longhairs and medium hairs are still the most common type of cat owned in the UK.
Domestic shorthairs have a short, sleek coat and Domestic medium hairs have a slightly longer, sleek coat. Domestic longhairs have a much longer coat which requires regular grooming. All types of domestic cats have a range of coat colours which can include tortoiseshell, calico, tabby and solid colours from black all the way through to white.
Domestic cats are of mixed ancestry and so their temperaments and appearance vary greatly between individuals. They can have very different body types, shapes and builds depending on the breeds in their genetic history. Similarly, they can have very different personalities and temperaments. Some may be very lively whilst others are much more laid back. In general, domestic cats are active, highly intelligent and excellent hunters.
As the genetic base of the cats is very wide, there are no specific health issues identified for domestic cats.
