How Ilford PDSA Animal Cemetery began
The story of Maria Dickin CBE and PDSA
Maria was one of the leading voices in improving the lives not just of so many animals, but of their owners, too. While doing social work with those facing financial hardship in the East End, she saw how their animals were suffering because they couldn’t afford private veterinary care and she decided to take action.
Born in 1870 in London, Maria Dickin CBE had always been passionate about helping those in need. When she married in 1899, Maria gave up her job as was expected of her. She was an independent thinker and wanted to help people, so instead of a full-time job Maria decided to put her efforts into social work.
Maria saw no difference between the cry of a suffering animal and the cry of a suffering person. For her, they were one and the same. She decided she couldn’t let animals suffer and did something about it.
How the cemetery came to be
The site was originally purchased in 1927 and was known as the PDSA Sanatorium at the time. The first pet to be buried was shortly after this when an elderly lady asked if the vet could bury her pet, which he did, and soon after others followed. Now, around 3,000 animals have been laid to rest in the grounds.
Although now closed for public burials, the cemetery is maintained as a historical site. The ground was dedicated by the Bishop of Chelmsford in 1949, with the first dog being buried here in the 1920s. Each of the graves was originally marked with a wooden plaque containing the animal’s name and relevant dates. However, over the years, the weather and general wear and tear took their toll on the cemetery.
